The 2002 NPL team is currently in Colorado competing for the chance to be crowned as NPL National Champions. The team, led by Coach Bob Meals, has had a stellar season leading up to Nationals. The girls placed 2nd in the U17 NPL North League table with a record of 6-1-5, while only allowing 11 goals against.
Finishing in 2nd gained the girls qualification to the NPL playoffs where they would compete against Continental FC in the semifinals. The girls went on to win that game 4-0, which meant they would square off against CFC. CFC finished ahead of our 02s in league play even though we drew 1-1 and beat them 2-1 in the regular season. Coach Bob and the girls were confident going into the final, and they managed to beat CFC 2-1 securing their spot to NPL Nationals. Coach Bob has been thrilled with the development of the team over the course of the year, and he credits the success of the team to their work ethic. “We have worked hard and our team play has gotten us this far. We need to continue to play for each other, and bring the right attitude, effort and focus to each game.”
From a club perspective, this is the first team in the club’s history that Scorpions SC has sent a team to the NPL National Championship. Club Co-Director’s Nick Rugnetta and Evan Burokas are ecstatic with the team's accomplishment. “We are so proud of Coach Bob Meals and the 2002 NPL team making it to NPL Nationals !! In our 8-9 years participating in the league we have made a number of semifinals and finals appearances in the Northeast NPL Playoffs, but not until this team and this year have we actually won the league title and booked a ticket to Nationals !!
The girls have already made the club so proud of them, one more win will see them advance to the semifinals. Everyone at Scorpions is behind you girls, good luck and Go Scorpions !!”
Co-Director Evan Burokas, also applauded the way the 02s were able to reach National. “Everyone at the club is extremely proud of this 2002 team and Coach Bob for their perseverance throughout the entire season. Not only were they competitive in a tough conference, but they also won games in true Scorpions style by dominating possession and controlling the tempo of their games. They thoroughly deserve this opportunity in Colorado to claim a National Championship and the entire Scorpions community is rooting for them !”
The girls had their first game yesterday against Highline Premier FC (WA). The 02s were able to win the game 7-3 giving them a good cushion in terms of Goal Differential. The goals came from 4 different players! Kate Bosert had 2, Jordyn Collins had 2, Bethany Steiner had 2, and Lauren Corliss had 1. Maggie Richards had a massive PK save, which kept the game tight and ultimately gave the girls the confidence to push on and put the game out of reach.
Today, the girls played a very good Campton United (IL) side. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, which was probably a fair result according to Coach Bob. We had a lot of chances, but the Campton keeper made some excellent saves to keep them in the game. As of now, the girls have 4 points with one win and one tie, and a goal differential of +4. Campton United also sits on 4 points with one win and a tie, and a GD of +1. As long as we take care of business tomorrow and get a win we should be through to the next round. Things could get interesting if Campton win by 4 or more goals. In that case we would need to win by 3 to secure qualification.
Coach Bob is happy with the way the girls have played thus far, but he knows that getting to the semifinals is in their hands. “We control our own destiny, so we just need to keep winning. Our focus is on playing a solid game, finishing our chances, and getting to the next round of Nationals.”
The 02s will finish up group play tomorrow at 12:30 against Legends Premier. We are all behind you girls, and we will be cheering you on from Massachusetts !!
