Scorpions SC had 3 teams that went out to San Diego for ECNL Nationals. The club had a team in each division of playoffs. The 05 ECNL girls particiated in the Champions League Division, the 04 ECNL girls particpated in the North American Cup, and the 02 ECNL girls played in the Showcase Division.
The 05s went 1-1-1, the 04s won 2 and lost 1, and the 02s won all 4 games which led to them being crowned as champions of the Showcase Division. This is a fantastic accomplishment for Scorpions as it is the first ECNL champsionship for the club !
If you weren't able to see the games live in San Diego you can read Coach Tim Mason's recap of playoffs below.
Scorpions 3 – 0 FC Alliance
A really strong start from the team saw us score a really good goal, with Lexi Vaillancourt finishing an excellent through ball from Abby Cash. Jordyn Ferrantino added a fantastic second goal, firing into the top corner from 25 yards before Meg Hughes added a third after rounding the keeper. A strong defensive performance and some good early saves from Niki Skola ensured a shut out and comfortable victory.
Scorpions 2 – 0 Stars West
A really hard fought game game was tied 0-0 at half time, with both teams competing well. The deadlock was broken when Dot Tilden fired in a free kick from distance, with Meg Hughes adding a second goal on the counter attack late in the game. In warm conditions, this was a really hard fought game and the girls showed excellent character and determination to come out on top.
Scorpions 2 – 2 Atlanta Fire (won 7-6 on PK’s)
We started off the game really well and went one up through Meg Hughes after we won the ball high up the field. However, early in the second half we gave up our first goals of the tournament in quick succession, putting us 2-1 down. Not to be beaten, a very determined finish to the game saw Meg score a second with a few minutes left which took us to PK’s. Olivia Dubin was the star as she made 3 saves in the shootout, as we won 7-6 on PK’s after 10 rounds of penalties.
Scorpions 3 – 2 Tampa Bay
We started off the final on the front foot, and we immediately got on the ball looking to dominate play. Both teams were dangerous going forward and it was a very intense start. We took the lead through Jordyn Ferrantino, who scored directly from a corner, before a great through ball from Marina Kiralis sent Meg Hughes away, who put us 2-0 up. We gave up a cheap goal shortly afterwards, but we showed great character to come back and score a third almost immediately with a great finish from Lexi Vaillancourt after Abby Cash’s cross. The second half was another tough battle, and Tampa pulled a goal back with around 20 minutes to go to make it a really interesting game. However, the girls stood up, fought and competed for every ball, holding on for an awesome win and a deserved championship. Over the week the girls worked extremely hard, played some very good soccer and scored some fantastic goals and winning the championship was a great achievement.
Congratulations again to the 02 ECNL team! We are so proud of you all!!
